Field Services: Scam or Legitimate Opportunity ?

I had a very enjoyable conversation today with a gentleman in Hawaii.  He had purchased my mortgage field services business manual and had a few questions.  Here are some of the items we discussed.

Question:  How do I find out if there is a need for another field service company in my area?

Answer:  I get this question a lot.  My answer is pretty much always the same.  There is always a need for another field service company in your area.  The trick is to find the need and fill it.  Yes, I know you have heard that before, but let me give you a few ideas.

Call real estate companies, attorneys, private investigators, insurance companies and any business that loans money.  They all, at one time or another, are going to need someone to drive-by, contact, look for, deliver, pick-up, etc.  In fact, you should be contacting these companies even if you have plenty of work with mortgages and insurance related services.

Question:Â How do I actually start?

Answer:  Pick up the phone and call a few companies.  Ask to speak to the “Vendor Recruiter” for Alaska (use the state you live in or want to do work in).  In this business, if you perform inspections you are called a “Vendor”.  If you do property preservation, you are called a “Contractor”.

Question:  What do I say?

Answer: You can start out by saying that you are new in the business and looking for work.  You can also start out by not saying too much about yourself and asking questions to find out the company’s present status for reps and coverage in the area.

A lot of company recruiters will let you know they do not need anyone in your area but “We need a rep to do …..” or, “We need someone in …..”.

Be polite and be business-like.  If you have no luck today, call again in a couple of weeks and ask to speak to the same recruiter.  Their status may have changed.
