Stone Soup

I hope you can appreciate the distinct difference in my conversations with you here and the articles for an entirely different reader over at TheRepReportâ„¢. I just finished a short article at TheRepReport called “Field Services Stone Soup”. You may like to read it even though I do not feel you need to unless you are just curious.
Why do I feel that you don’t need to read it? It’s because I usually hear from at least one visitor to this blog every day. You, along with other visitors, contribute to this small batch of stone soup every day. Today was particularly enjoyable, I had the opportunity to talk with four new reps and they all contributed something to the soup. Everyone is slowly moving in the right direction.
Where have I been? We’re still doing all those FEMA inspections in addition to our regular work. I will have to say that for the last week I have not been as loyal to you as I should have been but we really have been swamped. I absolutely had to work a lot more than usual because of the unusally large amount of business during our “slow time”. Yes, I remember – we no longer have a “slow time”.
Our accountant called for us to pick up our tax returns. She said all we had to do was sign the forms and include the checks! Yea. That’s easy enough – the part about signing the forms. The hurricanes sure had a large impact on our income in 2006. If you do insurance field work in an area that has had a natural disaster, your income will take a big jump too.
What income producing ideas do I have to share with you? Well, first on my mind always is that I hope you do not forget my consistent recommendation to find and cultivate some of your own accounts.  If you are at a loss as to how to do that, you can give me a call and we’ll talk about a few things we have done in the past that helped our business.
I would like to think you have visited the RepReports™ menu button at TheRepReport™ and understand how to use them. The RepReports™ were put there to help you find opportunities. Again, if you have questions, give me a call.
Don’t forget about diversification. I had a long talk with a rep in Colorado today. He and I agreed that there are certain facets of this industry that are going to benefit quite a bit from the sub-prime loan crisis and other areas are going to get hurt real bad. Plan ahead, look down the road and devise a rock solid “Plan A” and a pretty good “Plan B”. What do you think is going to take a hit. What do you think is going to do better?
I have not had any time for the manual update. I am able to only give it a few minutes a day now. I know that is a disappointment to some of you, but there is nothing I can do to change that for now. Eventually I will get the few hours I need to wrap up this edition.
You will never have circumstances identical to ours but there will always be similarities. Your method of doing business, the field services you enjoy or dislike, your clients and other factors make your circumstances different. I understand that and accept it but I tell everyone to be ready to go to work if you are called on.
We had a phone call from one of our companies asking us if we could do one thousand and fifty inspections outside our normal area and have them returned in two weeks. Well, honestly – no we can’t. So the next question was do we know anyone that we could recommend. We called a few field reps we have been helping get up and running and they must have been intimidated by the volume because they declined the work. Oops!
OK. I understand. I really do; but this could happen to you too. I know, you’re saying you hope it does. Well I hope it does too but just be sure you are ready for business if you tell everyone you’re in the business.
I’m starting to ramble. Tomorrow I’ll been in the south end again. Give me a call but be prepared for lousy cell phone coverage.
