You may not have had the opportunity to read the e-book I offer so I want to mention that a high priority of the e-book is to tell the whole story about the field inspection business. The good, the bad and the ugly.
I have mentioned many times that this is a great business but newcomers need to know that some companies have a tendency to shy away from telling the whole story. What I am saying is you need to know what you are doing and who you are dealing with.
Dealing with some companies is sort of like buying a new car. The salesperson may tell you about the soundproofing, the brakes, the special dash controls and so on. If the gas mileage is six miles to the gallon, chances are that it will never be mentioned. In this case, some car sales and some field services businesses operate with the policy that you should have read the sticker in the window or did your own research.
But there are companies that go far beyond not mentioning some detail. Some of them really do try to take advantage.
I received an e-mail today detailing the activities of one company. I am reprinting that e-mail here with permission but I have removed any information about the rep or the company. Here is the e-mail:
So I read today’s post and think about what happened yesterday..
True story
Customer calls to tell me that the two bills he has outstanding with me
that will not be paid until the end of the year (not to mention the
bills are already 60 days past due)…and then he says that’s ok
right???In my best effort of not cussing him out then and there I simply say
“Umm, no that’s not ok” He proceeds to explain to me that they took a
75K hit for companies that did not pay them so therefore his “counsel”
has advised him that he would not be able to make good on his debts with
(us) because he was not paid to begin with until the end of the
year…..he also trys to explain to me that one of the two (jobs) we
are billing him for did not fund….at this point I am still trying to
understand how and when this became my problem and WHY I should be ok with him not paying his bill until the end of the year….Finally I cut him short and explain to him while I understand the
hardship that he is facing that still will not be an acceptable excuse
not pay his bill…for crying out loud the whole two bills come to a
whopping $150.00…(removed paragraph with identifying wording)
Dead beat clients name is (removed) and to put the cherry on top someone else from his office called with another “rush” closing order that very afternoon. Our response was “are you kidding me????”….
Regards,
m
I can’t say for sure if this rep will get paid. There are things that can be done to encourage payment but none are guaranteed one hundred percent.
Now, just to let you know there are also good companies, let me tell you about our day. We invoiced six hundred and forty dollars for the day. Some mortgage inspections, two commercial inspections and some property preservation services. I feel pretty sure we will be paid. The companies we did the work for have paid pretty much on time for the last six years or so.
