Don’t Underestimate The Greed

Here I go again – the street corner preacher. Before you read the rest of the story, I would like for you to settle in on the fact that the problem may be with me. Maybe I’m the pot that’s calling the kettle black.
I know that I’ve mentioned many times that we keep a pretty good check on the pulse of our business around here. Even though I was talking just yesterday about the obscene volume of work that we are getting now, that doesn’t mean that I can let the idea of “volume” blind me to other aspects of the business.
We’ve been getting to work early and staying late. That’s one of the real joys of being self employed – you can work yourself much more than any boss would ever dream of working you. Yea, I’ve seen the pictures - working at home, feet propped up; nothing on but pj’s and house slipppers. Around here we do show up to work in pj’s and some days we’re so busy we end the work day in the same pj’s. Anyway, back to the story.
This morning, while having my coffee and looking over the work piling up in the field inspectors’ bins, I thought it was really strange that a couple of the bins did not have as many inspection orders in them as I thought they should. Well, one thing leads to another you know. So, we spent about the next two hours or so “looking at the numbers”.
They’ve done it to us again! I’m almost too embarrassed to admit it but I should have known better. Anyway, the numbers for some of our areas was way down. Like a ole’ time gospel singer singing bass – that low. Holy *&^4%!
We were doctoring the phone blisters when the truth was mistakenly muttered by the other end. They had lowered our cap when we agreed to help them out by taking on another area where they could not find a rep. So there you are. Another example of severe punishment to those who do favors. In a nutshell, they had cut the number of inspections in our normal work areas when they added the new areas.
Now, am I the pot calling the kettle black? The new areas resulted in more inspections with more pay than those that were cut. I only want to know why they never mention that taking on additional areas means you’re going to lose some of what you already have. So there you have it. And as the saying goes, “cheat me once, shame on you; cheat me twice, shame on me”.
Well, I gotta’ go. Someone’s calling wanting us to take some more areas.
