Field Services: Scam or Legitimate Opportunity ?

Brothers In Arms

Often, I do not need much encouragement to pull out the soapbox.  You know that by now.  If I get even one call during the week concerning just about any topic, then that topic is eligible for discussion.  If I get two calls in the same week about the same subject, well then, here we go.

Today’s topic is affiliation.  You can call it membership, joining or a bunch of other things but it all boils down to forming a social or business relationship.  I got two calls this week with inquiries about which organization to join – and it’s only Wednesday.  I wouldn’t be stretching the truth too much if I said I try really hard to not influence people on some things.  I really do, but when someone calls and asks to be influenced ….

Evidently one caller got ahold of some darn good promotional literature on one organization.  After reading the literature, the caller said it almost seemed that one would have to join this organization.  After all, the literature said the organization set the industry standards and represented them.  Hmmm?  We went over all the literature together and could not find what the standards were.  We couldn’t find mention of where, when or why the representation took place.  I’m sure we just didn’t know where to look.

Looking at the second organization, we found a long list of membership benefits.  None of the benefits looked like they were related to what we do but, hey, everyone can take advantage of a discount at the local quick food chicken place.  By the way, I compared this list of membership benefits with the local chamber of commerce benefits.  The chamber is way, way ahead and costs less too.

The caller sounded confident that I would have to admit that getting business from other organization members and being on that organization’s membership list would have five star advantages.  Alas, we’ll never know – unless we send the check and get a peek at the list.  It’s a closed membership list.  Only thing to do, I guess, is pay your money and take your chances.

Here’s a challenge for you:  The British rock group, “Dire Straits” had a album in 1985 titled “Brothers in Arms”.  One of the songs on that album was the #1 hit in the U.S. for three weeks and became the groups top single.  The name of that song sums up my opinion about the current affiliation opportunities.[tp]aNaKWXqXkhw&hl[/tp]
