Field Services: Scam or Legitimate Opportunity ?

A Postage Stamp Can Save Your Business

My performance has been a little less than I would like the last couple of days. I have tried very hard to perform four of these commercial inspections a day but I have been able to do that only on one day so far. There seems to always be some little glitch.

The glitches however tie in perfectly with a couple of stories I’d like to tell you though. So, here goes.

Yesterday I had a brief conversation with some reps up toward God’s country – yep, they got one up there too! Anyway, it seems that this couple may have been getting a little discouraged while trying to build a field services business and then, all of a sudden, they are in negotiation with “A Big Fish”. I used to work for this company and the monthly income from that company alone was about what most people make in four months. I don’t really know what glitches they may have encountered up until now, but obviously it pays to overcome the glitches and continue on.
I’ve always told you exactly how it is; it is going to take time and if you don’t have the time you need to move on. But, if there is any way to hang in there, I have never seen perseverance fail.

The second little story is about a conversation I had with a company recruiter. I was on a two hour drive so we talked for over an hour; mostly about the number of reps that moan and groan and complain about fees. Both of us have some experience in this business so it was very easy to do the calculations in your head and realize that a lot of reps are being very, very short sighted. In fact, I have often heard “I won’t crank up my car for less than twenty five dollars”. Personally, I would like more reps to be like that because I know how much it really costs to crank up my car! Here are the few glitches I had to deal with the last two days:

  • Dropped my camera. $111 for a new one.
  • Bad tire. $58 for a new one.
  • Thunder storms required installing new wipers. $23
  • Stuck seat belt. Still stuck!
  • Waited on manager to show up – one hour lost.
  • Got caught on roof inspection during sudden downpour.
  • Hot and sweaty all day, every day.

But when it’s all over I will have made enough to replace the car if I want to or take a nice vacation and laugh about it all.

“Consider the postage stamp, my son. It secures success through its ability to stick to one thing till it gets there”.

Billings, Josh American humorist (1818–1885)
